"Best Day Yet," produced by
Bob Tyler includes 13 original songs. The album features a group
of talented musicians including former Subdudes members John
Magnie (piano, accordian, harmonica) and Steve Amadee (percussion),
along with Bob Tyler (guitar) Rich Moore (bass), Tim O'Brien
(fiddle, mandolin, bozouki), Jeremy Lawton (Hammond B-3), and
Celeste Krenz and Mollie O'Brien on background vocals.
Producer Bob Tyler describes Zobl's music as being "as real and heartfelt
as a Norman Rockwell painting. He has an uncanny ability to make you want to
look back while still looking forward."
The stories and memories communicated throughout "Best
Day Yet" are deeply personal yet unquestionably universal.
His lyrics and music are filled with honesty and simplicity that
move you to appreciate everyday life. "Best Day Yet" provides
a refreshing perspective and is a fine first effort from Dave
Zobl.

"If Dave Zobl reads this, can you tell me where
'Seal Beach' is? After hearing the song, I HAVE GOT TO GO THERE!"

I feel like I grew up with Dave Zobl after hearing Same
Things. Just when I am feeling mellow, Zobl hits me with
the humor and wit of Baby Boomer Blues and God Grades
on a Curve.
Bottom Line...this one is a keeper.

"A friend sent me this CD and said 'you
got to hear this!' I am a late 'thirty-something' who
was raised on Petty, Mellencamp and Springsteen. It has been
years since I have heard a disc that I HAVE to listen to over
and over.My
Backyard takes me right to my own backyard 20 years ago. Iowa
Boy makes me teary everytime I hear it. A true midwestern
epic.

"I let a friend borrow this CD and it wasn't returned
for one year! In fact, anybody that I pass onto loves it! I don't
want to compare Dave to any other artist because I believe that
would be a disservice to his music. Very talented songwriter!
I love all of the songs, but am especially fond of Bride
to Be and Same
Things.

"This CD provides a great insight into everyday
thoughts and dreams of a typical guy growing up in the midwest
in the sixties and seventies, and places far beyond later on.
It's really a great CD to listen to when you are ready to relax
and let your mind wander, to those times when you remember growing
up, whether ten or thirty or some age in between. Games at Kinnick
in Iowa City are some of the best times I also remember as a
kid, as well as a student, and the song typifies his creative
insights into the life of an Iowa boy always dreaming of something
different, sometimes distant, from where you are or where you're
going.

"I find Dave Zobl's 'Best Day Yet' very upbeat
and refreshing. The easy flowing lyrics stir emotions of all kinds
and leave one feeling good.
This disc is wonderfully produced and showcases these original songs with the
support of gifted instrumentalists. The varied musical styles presented seem
to bring each song to one's heart or funny bone with equal dispatch.
This music is at times introspective, philosophical, humorous, and nostalgic...always
with a positive vibration.
'Best Day Yet' is definitely worth owning and spinning on a frequent basis." |
Lyrics to "My Backyard"
When I was a kid I played for the Bears
I was Dick Butkis and I was Gale Sayers
Out in my backyard without any cares
I'm gonna be somebody.
Baseball came with summer days
I'm Mickey Mantle and I'm Willie Mays
Out in my backyard making great plays
I'm gonna be somebody.
Chorus:
Whatever happened to that little kid
Confidence in everything he did
Never scared to take a chance
Left nothing up to happenstance
He got old and his life got hard
Gotta go back to my backyard.
I saw the Beatles on the Sullivan show
That'll be me one day I know
Out in my backyard with the radio
I'm gonna be somebody.
Remember the day we landed on the moon?
I said to myself I'll be up there soon
Out in my backyard in a rocket I'd zoom
I'm gonna be somebody.
( Chorus )
It can be tough getting older
Your deepest dreams you disregard
Take the weight of the world off your shoulder
And head on back to your backyard
Gonna go back to my backyard.
Lyrics to "I Hope God Grades On a Curve"
They'll never be a halo
Hangin' over my head
They'll never be a saint
Named after me
But I say my prayers
Before I go to bed
And Mom does laps
around the rosary.
I don't lie, cheat or steal
Except in extreme emergencies
And when I do I always barter a deal
And give a little extra at the offertory.
Chorus:
But all in all I'm a pretty good guy
Do the right thing
I always try
There are times I've been a schmuck
But with my kind of luck
God grades on a curve.
I've traveled a long road
To say the least
And many a time
I took the wrong direction
So every other month
I find a priest
Who can take a day off
For my confession.
( Chorus )
When I get up to the pearly gates
And they take my file off the shelf
I'll have reason to celebrate
If they average my score
With everyone else.
